What Is Registered Massage Therapy?

A single massage treatment at the Vancouver Downtown Wellness Centre with one of our registered massage therapist’s (RMT) can be 45 minutes, 60 minutes, or 90 minutes in duration. Each treatment session will vary and be carefully modified to meet each patient’s presenting issue or concern based on an accurate assessment.

Your RMT will administer a variety of hands on techniques including , deep tissue, myofascial release, joint mobilization, hydrotherapy, and rehabilitative exercise such as stretching, strengthening, postural modification and patient education based on your body’s therapeutic and relaxation needs.

Massage Therapy

There are tremendous benefits to be achieved through regular massage therapy treatments from a Registered Massage Therapist. Whether your need is to have a moment of relaxation, reduce muscle tension or attain relief from chronic pain, a therapeutic massage can enhance your overall sense of emotional and physical well-being as well as your quality of life.

Massage therapy benefits people of all ages. While it benefits the injured, the ill and the stressed, the strength of massage therapy in preventing illness and conditions before they develop cannot be overlooked. Massage therapy can be used in the treatment of both acute and chronic stages of conditions.

Massage FAQ – Asked, and Answered

How will I benefit from a Massage?

An adjustment is a highly skilled and precise movement usually applied by hand to a joint of the body. Adjustment loosens the joint to restore proper movement and optimize function.
When a joint is adjusted, a gas bubble escapes causing the popping noise you may have heard about.

Chiropractic adjustment techniques have been researched extensively. Complications are rare and side-effects, such as temporary soreness, are usually minor. Your chiropractor is well-trained to determine if your problem will respond to chiropractic care or if you require referral to another health care provider.

How does a Massage feel?

It usually depends on the techniques used. In a general Swedish massage, your session may start with broad, flowing strokes (effleurage) that will help calm your nervous system and relax exterior muscle tension, and there are a variety of other techniques used to provide specific therapeutic results. This will depend on your assessment and treatment goals. Your therapist will discuss any techniques that may be potentially painful or cause discomfort Everyone responds differently to massage, and it is important to discuss your sensitivity to pressure and pain. Often, a light oil or lotion is used to allow your muscles to be massaged without causing excessive friction to the skin. Do not hesitate to ask questions or mention if you feel any discomfort so that the massage therapist can use another approach or technique.

Is a Massage always the right solution?

No, there are several medical conditions that would make massage inappropriate. That’s why it is necessary that you fill out the health history forms and before you begin your session. The massage therapist will ask general health questions to rule out if you have any contraindications to massage. It is very important that you inform the practitioner of any health problems or medications you are taking. High blood pressure can also be a concern, and it is important to discuss any blood pressure issues you may have or have had in the past.

How will I feel after a Massage Therapy treatment?

Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity. After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity which can last for days. Since toxins are released from your soft tissues during a massage, it is recommended you drink plenty of water following your massage. Massage therapists sometimes recommend a hot Epsom salt bath that encourages the release of toxins that may have been released into the blood stream during the massage treatment.
