The Meaning of Comprehensive Health Care

The simple definition of the word “comprehensive” is to be complete or to include all the necessary elements or aspects of something.  The same definition applies for comprehensive health care delivery.  Comprehensiveness is to ensure that when assessing a patient, all of the necessary aspects of that individual are carefully considered in arriving at a proper diagnosis and from this approach to devise an effective plan of management to successfully address the patient’s health care needs.

Comprehensive chiropractic care is no different:  it refers to a holistic approach to health that encompasses a variety of treatments and strategies aimed at improving the overall well-being of patients. There are 2 key components involved in comprehensive chiropractic care:

1. Well- Rounded Initial Consultation:

The initial consultation is to include a thorough health history, physical examination, arrival at a working diagnosis that is communicated to the patient via a report of findings which leads into the plan of management or treatment plan and consent to care.

2. Plan of Management or Chiropractic Treatment Plan:

A detailed plan that is personalized to each individual patient. The plan includes the goal of treatment, treatment strategies that will be employed, the length of the treatment as well as overall prognosis and recovery time.  Key components in a chiropractic care plan include:

  • Spinal and extremity adjustive therapy to alleviate joint dysfunction and or misalignments.
  • Electrotherapy application in the form of electrical muscular stimulation, ultrasound, radial shock wave therapy etc. to reduce soft tissue contracture/inflammation and to improve flexibility and promote healing.
  • Manual therapy such as massage, passive stretching and active release techniques for proper soft tissue care.
  • Heat or cryotherapy to promote circulation or reduce inflammation.
  • Nutritional and dietary counseling by advising patients on diet and supplements to support their overall health and specific conditions.
  • Foot orthotics or bracing when required to correct any biomechanical abnormalities that may be contributing to the patient’s condition.
  • Lifestyle Advice and modification including guidance on sitting/sleeping/walking ergonomics/posture, stress management, and other lifestyle factors that can impact health.
  • Home rehabilitation programs tailored to help patients recover from injuries and prevent future aggravation of symptoms.
  • Fitness consultation to ensure that exercise activity is being done properly and to further educate the patient to achieve their fitness goals pain and injury-free.
  • Diagnostic testing such as utilizing X-rays, MRIs, and other diagnostic tools to better understand the patient's condition and monitor progress as required
  • Overall patient education: teaching patients about their condition and how to manage it most effectively.

The goal of comprehensive chiropractic care is to address the root causes of health issues, promote healing, and improve overall quality of life.
