Chances are you’re already familiar with herbal or home remedies. Many of us have childhood memories of nurturing mothers and wise grandmothers, ready at a moment’s notice to tackle illness at the first sign of a sniffle. Often armed with nothing more than something found in the kitchen or garden, they always made us feel better.
If you long to get back to simpler times when a case of the sniffles didn’t automatically result in a trip to the doctor and more medical bills, then these five must-haves will ensure your herbal medicine cabinet is as well-stocked and ready for action as Grandma‘s.
Aloe Vera
The gel from this succulent plant has been used since times immemorial for burns and skin irritations of all types. Simply break off a small piece from a living plant or use bottled aloe vera gel and rub gently on the afflicted area. Bear in mind, aloe vera gel is not for internal use.
Clove Oil
Clove oil is most often associated with toothache remedies. It works just as well or better than many over-the-counter oral pain relievers while also having antiseptic properties to treat cuts, scrapes and even acne.
Echinacea/Goldenseal
This synergistic combination has been shown in studies to not only boost immunity, but can also shorten the duration of the common cold.
Tea Tree Oil
Another great oil used for minor cuts, scrapes and a host of skin ailments including eczema.
Willow Bark
Did you know that an active constituent of willow bark is also the active ingredient in aspirin? In tincture or pill form, it is a great fever reducer and also helps alleviate arthritis pain and sore joints. Those sensitive to aspirin, or those on blood thinners, should avoid willow bark.
More and more people are getting back to basics. A working knowledge of useful herbs and home remedies is essential. For those not up to speed on their natural remedies, a trip to your local library or bookstore, as well as browsing the internet can help you familiarize yourself with the many safe-to-use herbal treatments out there.
